How to target local customers with Facebook ads

Updated 6 October 2026 · GigaEasy

A local shop only makes money from people who can reach it. Good targeting means your budget is spent on people nearby who are likely to buy, not on the whole country.

1. Location comes first

Choose the area you can actually serve. In Meta's Ads Manager you can choose a city with a radius, drop a pin on an address, or pick a whole state. On GigaEasy you choose your city with a radius from 17 to 80 km, or a whole state. That keeps setup simple and gives Meta enough people to work with.

Also say your locality or landmark in the ad text. This filters out people who are too far away better than any setting.

2. Age: who actually buys

Don't leave every ad at 18–65 by default. A preschool's buyers are mostly parents aged 25–40; a bridal makeup artist's are often brides and their families. Pick a sensible range, but don't make it too narrow.

3. A few interests, not dozens

Add 3–6 interests closely tied to what you sell, such as "baking" and "desserts" for a cake shop. Too many narrow interests make the audience small and expensive.

4. Let Meta learn

Meta's delivery system learns who responds to your ad and shows it to more people like them. Give a new ad 5–7 days before changing the targeting. Constant changes reset the learning.

Frequently asked questions

What is the smallest area I can target?

In Ads Manager you can target a small radius around a pinned address. On GigaEasy you choose a city radius from 17 to 80 km, or a whole state. Mention your locality in the ad to attract the nearest customers.

Should I target by gender?

Only if your product is clearly for one group, such as a ladies-only gym batch. Otherwise let Meta find who responds.

Why is my audience 'too narrow'?

Too many filters (small area, narrow age, many interests) leave too few people. Remove some interests or widen the age range.
